Depression can affect nearly every area of life, including relationships, physical health, career performance, sleep, energy levels, and overall wellbeing. When symptoms persist, many people find their world becoming smaller and more difficult to navigate.

The good news is that treatment options continue to evolve, and individuals who haven't found success with one approach may benefit from exploring additional evidence-based options under professional guidance.

"TMS is the same as shock therapy."

It isn't. TMS is very different from Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses, does not induce seizures, and does not require anesthesia. Patients remain awake and alert throughout treatment.

"TMS is painful."

Most patients describe TMS as feeling like a tapping sensation on the scalp. Some people experience temporary scalp discomfort or mild headaches, particularly during early sessions.

"TMS is a last resort."

While TMS is often considered after other treatments have not provided sufficient relief, it is one of several evidence-based options that may be discussed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

What To Expect

1. TMS Consultation & Eligibility Evaluation

The process begins with a comprehensive evaluation.

Your provider will review:

  • Current symptoms

  • Previous treatment history

  • Medication trials

  • Therapy history

  • Medical considerations

  • Treatment goals

We'll determine whether TMS may be clinically appropriate and whether insurance requirements are likely to be met.

2. Personalized Treatment Planning

If TMS is recommended, your provider will develop a personalized treatment protocol and determine the exact treatment location and stimulation settings.

This initial "mapping" process helps ensure treatment is tailored to your specific needs.

3. Daily Treatment Sessions

During treatment:

  • You remain awake and alert

  • No anesthesia is required

  • A treatment coil is positioned against your scalp

  • Targeted magnetic pulses are delivered to specific brain regions

Many patients read, listen to music, or relax during treatment sessions.
