Revisit the Energy of Holistic Wellness

In a previous blog , we outlined holistic health and how this lifestyle offers a unique approach toward achieving wholeness. With the new year underway, many people are focused on personal well-being. As such, we wanted to revisit the energy of holistic wellness and provide another pathway to consider on your mental health journey.

Holistic = Whole-istic The term “ holistic ” means of or relating to holism, which refers to studies or treatment methods that involve whole systems rather than individual segments of them. For instance, holistic medicine aims to treat a person as a whole – mind, body, and spirit – whereas traditional methods merely address specific symptoms or diseases.

What is Holistic Health and Wellness?

How do you define a healthy lifestyle? Does it involve daily supplements, regular exercise, or mindful meditation? We all have a mental image of what healthy living entails, but would you say your approach to wellness is more holistic or clinical? Another way to phrase this question is to consider the following scenario: when you visit your doctor to cure an illness, do you wish to relieve your symptoms or treat the underlying issue that’s causing them.

What Does Holistic Health Mean? According to the American Holistic Health Association , there are two common definitions people use when discussing holistic health and wellness: (1) holistic refers to the healing of the “whole person”, who is made up of interdependent parts (e.g. the mind, body, and spirit); or (2) holistic is used as a synonym to mean alternative therapies vs. Western medicine practices.

Improve Wellness in the New Year

Welcome a new year and a new outlook. For many of us, December 31 sparks a new beginning or milestone, marking where we are and where we hope to be in the coming year. Your New Year’s resolution may include exercising more, finding a better job, getting out of credit card debt, or learning ways to improve your mental health, so that you feel stronger and more confident going into 2023.

If improving mental health is your resolution, the key to success will be making and following a plan. Here are some tips to become a better you and ways to improve wellness in the new year.

Health is a Journey

Too often, we think of health–whether mental, physical or emotional–as a static state. Once we lose weight, attain sobriety, return from the throes of depression, anxiety, addiction or some other illness to a manageable state, we believe we won’t have to worry anymore or continue to manage our health.

We believe our problem will remain “fixed.” But if you ask anyone who has wrestled with mental health, sobriety, physical health issues or other addictions, you will hear a very different story. It is a daily challenge to manage and maintain that healthy status.
